GCWA Residents Submission
Dear Residents,
BOAT SPEED LIMITS AT CURRIGEE
The Gold Coast Waterways Authority’s (GCWA) “Speed Limits and Behaviour Management Strategy 2018-2020 is attached. This report supports changes to boat speed limits that are evidence based and achieve an appropriate balance between safety and transport efficiency. It sets out as Priority 1 “Adopt a process to review speed limits and make changes where required”.
South Stradbroke Island Residents are therefore in a good position to request a reduction in the speed limit between the GCCC Campgrounds at North and South Currigee if we can present enough credible evidence, especially with respect to safety.
The GCWA say they “will always be happy to receive enquiries or listen to concerns about speed limits, or speed signs, for a particular area of Gold Coast waterways. These enquiries or concerns can be reported directly to GCWA by telephone on 07 5539 7350 or by email to mail@gcwa.qld.gov.au.”. We believe that it would be preferable that concerns are sent by email and copied to the committee (contact@southstradbroke.com.au or contact@currigeefootprints.com) so that we can collate and quote them when required.
A concern may be framed along the lines of the attached letter – please personalise and if possible include pictures as evidence before sending.
If you have any questions please email the committee at contact@southstradbroke.com.au or contact@currigeefootprints.com
Regards,
The Committee

Australia Day 2019 Currigee Fire Ban
Hot, dry conditions force long weekend Local Fire Ban
This ban would take effect from 0001hrs Friday 25 January and was expected to continue until 2359hrs on Monday 28 January.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) Brisbane Regional Manager Wayne Waltisbuhl said while the decision to impose a local fire ban was not taken lightly, it was essential to protect people in bushfire-prone areas.
“We know these spots are very popular among campers and we are imposing a local fire ban to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable long weekend,” Mr Waltisbuhl said.
“Brisbane has seen very little rainfall in recent months, so the ground is dry and vegetation will burn easily if a bushfire breaks out, especially given current weather conditions.”
Mr Waltisbuhl said the ban would not apply to barbecues but would prohibit lighting of any open fires, including campfires.
“Fires contained in a properly constructed, enclosed barbecue are still permitted, as are gas cookers, provided they are not left unattended,” he said.
“Residents who are planning to do some work around the house over the long weekend are still permitted to use machinery and equipment, but we ask everyone to be extra vigilant and have suitable equipment on hand to extinguish any fire that may start.
“One spark is all it takes to start a bushfire that can pose a threat to properties and lives.
“We don’t want to see a repeat of the recent fires on North Stradbroke Island and Bribie Island, which had a significant impact on those communities and also led to smoke affecting the greater Brisbane area.”
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) also warned fires in fire rings or fire places were not permitted in these National Parks or Recreation Areas.
Queensland Police Service (QPS), rangers from QPWS and campground managers will be patrolling camp areas to ensure campers are following the local fire bans.
For more information about fire bans, visit the Rural Fire Service website: https://www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/ .
Passing of Beth Wilson
Dear Residents,
Our Currigee community will be further saddened to learn that Beth Wilson passed away at her home in Ascot this morning. She and Blair build their home on the island more than 50 years ago and over this period thousands of guests have been warmly welcomed by Wilson hospitality. As was her custom every year, Beth spent this past Christmas and New Year at the island, and was present at the awards ceremony on New Year’s Day to proudly accept the Currigee Cup! She left the island only last Friday. Our best wishes to the Wilson Clan in the loss of this extraordinary person
Kind regards,
The Committee
Passing of Charles Roe
Dear Residents,
Our community will be sad to learn that Currigee resident Dr Charles Roe passed away on Tuesday afternoon (15/01/19). He had been suffering from a short illness and was moved to a mainland hospital. Charles’ life was intertwined with his experiences at Currigee many of which were captured in his book. He has lived at the island permanently for many years, right up until recent weeks. Charles was due to celebrate his 100th Birthday on February 14th.
Our thoughts are with Charles’ family and friends at this time.
Kind regards,
The Committee
Currigee Cup 2019 Results
On New Years Day 2019, the Currigee community came together to participate in the 53rd Currigee Cup; themed Vikings in honour of the courage and heroism we value on the island. Despite the low-tide the large beach area allowed a large number of craft and competitors to gather. Innovations this year included new Senior and Junior Paddle events and the much-welcomed ice-cream boat that came bearing refreshments. The Commodores would like to thank the participants and spectators for their community-minded spirit and enthusiasm on the day. Looking forward to the Currigee Cup 2020, with Commodores Scott Geldard, Nick Christie and Terry McGrath!
